Assam: Alleged ULFA Chairman Dr Mukul Hazarika Acquitted In Terror Charge Extradition Case In UK

London: A court in the United Kingdom (UK) has acquitted the alleged chairman of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) from all the charges.

The doctor named Dr. Mukul Hazarika was fighting a case regarding his extradition to India on a terror charge.

As per a report by PTI, the 75-year-old British citizen and general practitioner (GP) from Cleveland in northern England, was wanted by the Indian authorities for waging war or attempting to wage war, or abetting waging of war against the Indian government.

He was also charged by the Indian authorities of plotting to commit a terroristic act under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967.

District Judge Michael Snow's decision at Westminster Magistrates' Court said the accused should be acquitted because the details in the case were not satisfactory.

''There is no admissible evidence to establish that the respondent ULFA (I) is the President of Assam,'' he added.

The judge also said that Hazarika was termed as the self-styled head of a banned organization ULFA in India.

''There is no admissible evidence to provide the necessary identification that the respondent was the president of ULFA (I) or had delivered a speech at the training camp,'' he added.

Later, the judge discharged the defendant to section 84(5) of the 2003 (Extradition) Act.

There were some allegations that Hazarika was involved in recruiting new cadres in ULFA inside and outside India and conducting terrorist camps to launch attacks on Indian security forces.
